Sunlight to Petrol (S2P) technology, invented by researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, uses solar energy to recycle carbon dioxided and synthesize methanol and gasoline from constituent parts.
Previously considered too expensive and difficult to be worthwhile, the recent rise in oil prices has now highlighted this technology as being a practical solution to the worlds C02 emmission problem.
“This Is About Closing The Cycle… Right now, fossil fuels are emitting C02 and this would help us manage to reduce our emissions and put us on the path to a carbon neutral eneergy-system.”
Ellen Stechel, Manager of Sandia’s Fuel and Energy Transiitons Department.

Lonnie Johnson, inventor of the summer scourge that is Super Soaker hopes to turn flexible photovoltaic materials into thermal power plants. This in its self is nothing new, however with current technologies, only 30% of the available solar energy can be successfully be turned into power. Johnson claims that his technology can potentially double this efficiency rating to around the 60% mark which will not only improve efficiency but also potential savings.
With over 100 patients under his belt, Johnson calls his invention JTEC (Johnson Thermal Energy Conversion) which unlike photovoltaic technology, acts more like a fuel cell, curculating hydrogen between a 2 membrane electric diode. With no moving parts and no new catalysist (other than the sun), JTEC hopes to revolutionise home power generation.
